So what stops us? Too often I fear we spend more time attempting to understand God than choosing to trust him. Somehow we believe that if we can comprehend what God is up to, then we can obey him and go where he wants us to go. We think that if we know his motives and how his plans all come together, then we can comply. But God’s ways are not our ways, and his thoughts are not our thoughts (see Isaiah 55:8).

Faith does not require you to understand God. Faith requires you to trust him. His Word makes this clear: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Our blessing takes place when we shift from listening to God’s Word to obeying it.

Understanding God is not a prerequisite for trusting him. You don’t have to understand the engineering principles at work in order to fly in a plane; you simply have to trust the construction, mechanics, and pilot jetting you across the sky. You don’t need to comprehend astrophysics to delight in the awe-inspiring beauty of a black night sky salted with stars.

I know it’s not easy to trust. So many people have let you down. So many events have caught you off guard. So many betrayals have blindsided you. Somewhere inside, you built a lifeboat and vowed never to allow others to rock it. But that defensive posture—perhaps even one that was necessary to survive in the past—no longer serves you. It’s time to let go of all the lifeboats and plan Bs you’ve accumulated to safeguard your heart. In the words of that classic song from the Disney movie, “Let it go!”

Let go of that relationship that’s holding you back.

Let go of that memory.

Let go of that experience.

Let go of that trauma.

Let go of that idol, whether money or something else.

Let go of anything you’re relying on instead of God.

Let it all drift away!
